How we treat:

The Daybreak DBT Program and the Women’s Therapy Service of Montclair, LLC, offers expert assessment and  evidenced-based treatment for the full range of eating disorders and body image problems.   We are experienced and certified to treat  pediatric,  adolescent, and adult  eating disorders with boys and girls, and with men and women.  We are trained to recognize the biological and brain-based underpinnings of eating disorders and utilize the Evidenced-Based treatments  –  Family-Based Therapy (FBT) or Maudsley Approach, CBT-E, and DBT for Eating Disorders.  Parents are always included as an  essential  and an integral part of a child or teen’s recovery from an eating disorder.

 FBT - Family Based Treatment is the gold standard for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, particularly for early onset Anorexia, Bulimia,  or ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) . FBT is now considered FIRST-LINE-OF-TREATMENT.    In this method, the parents play a major role in the re-nourishment and weight restoration of their starving child, under the guidance of the trained and certified Family Based Treatment practitioner, in medical collaboration with an outpatient Pediatrician or Adolescent Medicine Specialist. CBT-E for Eating Disorders is an evidenced-based treatment that is transdiagnostic, for all eating disorders. It is most suitable for an older adolescent or adult. It is a time-limited CBT  treatment, 20-40 weeks, that aims to resolve problematic  eating disorder thinking and behaviors, in an efficient and compassionate manner. The CBT-E practitioner requires of the client, daily Real-Time Monitoring of  food and feelings to observe and track progress. Regular eating patterns are encouraged as an antidote for the dysregulation of eating behavior and cognition, in anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorders. This method is used to resolve the eating disorder itself as well as the problems and distresses – body checking, body avoidance, obsessions with shape and size, and body dysphoria. DBT - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy  is the treatment of choice for  individuals that struggle with  co-occuring mental health issues in addition to the eating disorder, such as depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, or PTSD. This comprehensive treatment method addresses the complexity of these mental health issues, in concert, prioritizing the most dangerous symptoms first. DBT Skills Training is excellent method for follow-up Aftercare and Relapse Prevention  after a residential or intensive Eating Disorder treatment program. The Expressive Arts Therapies are powerful and effective modalities in the treatment of eating disorders. Unexpressed emotions and thoughts out of awareness, interfere with true recovery. Art Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy, music, and Psychodramatic role-play make  emotions, bodily-felt sensations, and cognition more accessible. Once emotions and thoughts are accessible, one can better utilize the Problem-Solving  methods in CBT and DBT. Our Aim and Our Philosophy of Recovery

The aim of the Women’s Therapy Service is to provide expert assessment and treatment for eating disorders and offer our firm belief that full recovery is possible. The Women’s Therapy Service strongly advises early detection and intervention of eating disorders,  when prognosis is the most favorable.  We offer Family Based Treatment for pediatric and adolescent eating disorders to help your child reach his or her full potential, as efficiently as possible.

Getting started means making an appointment for your initial consultation and individualized assessment of you or your child’s eating disorder and body image problems. Part of our evaluation is a “level of care assessment” to help determine that outpatient  therapy is the right level of care for you. As a result of the evaluation, we will offer recommendations to maximize the efficiency of you or your child’s recovery.

If you chose us as your Primary Therapist, we will coordinate any other outpatient care  needed  consisting of a treatment team of experts needed for your or your child’s specific course of recovery.  The treatment team may  include Physicians, Adolescent Medicine Specialists, Nutritionists, and Psychiatrists, from the community, who are experienced and expert in the treatment eating disorders.


 Pre-occupation with food and weight
 Restrictive or ritualistic eating behaviors
 Social Withdrawal
 Mood changes such as irritability or guardedness
 Thinness without vibrancy
 Reluctance to eat in front of others or eat out
 Weight Loss accompanied by cessation of menstruation
 Exercise that is compulsive and driven

Warning Signs of Bulimia:

  • Binging

  • Pre-Occupation with food and weight

  • Laxative, diuretics, diet pill abuse

  • Depressed or anxious mood

  • Bathroom trips after meals

  • Compensatory behaviors such as purging or excessive exercise

  • Reluctance to eat in front of others or eat out.

  • Dishonesty with self and others


Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder  is characterized by out-of-control eating.  These behaviors lead to guilt feelings, self-loathing, depression, and feeling more out of control with food.  The binge/diet cycle ultimately leads to more weight gain and lowered self-esteem. This cycle cannot be cured or healed with yet another diet.

Warning Signs of Binge Eating Disorder

 Constant Weight Fluctuations
 Yo-yo dieting
 Feeling a lack of control around food
 Low Self-Esteem
 Late night binging
 Closet or sneak eating; hiding or hoarding food
 Self-loathing in regards to overeating
 Inner critical voices
 Eating to the point of painful fullness
 Depressed or anxious moods
 Eating large amounts of food in a short amount of time (usually       under two hours)

Body Image

Body Image is not how others see you, it is how you see yourself… from the inside…. in your mind’s eye. Body image is a complex, not a simple phenomenon, with many conscious and unconscious layers.

Influence your decisions to attend or avoid social situations? …
Trigger restricting, binging or purging, or overeating?….

Pre and Post Weight Loss Surgery Counseling

The Women’s Therapy Service offers individual and group therapy for those who are deciding on weight loss surgery or having already undergone it. Prior to surgery, the more you understand about how you have come to use food for emotional reasons, the better your emotional adjustment will be afterwards.

Post-surgery, many feelings are triggered by this surgery, when food is no longer possible for suppressing feelings. People often get depressed and anxious and are not emotionally prepared.  Body Image changes much slower than weight can drop and often the person is left with a new body and an old body image.

Without the proper emotional support during this process, binge eating can return with damaging effects. Some people finding that their reduced body size did not automatically bring them more fulfilling relationships, and they find themselves replacing their food addiction with new addictive behaviors, such as impulsive sexual behavior, drugs or alcohol, shopping, and even gambling to fill up empty or lonely feelings.

The key to successful adjustment to bariatric surgeryis individual and/or group counseling prior to the surgery and after surgery. Bariatric patients have been integrated into our INNER IMAGE group program for Overcoming Emotional Eating with much success.

Our philosophy and methods help chronic dieters reshape their thinking, shed unhealthy habits, become mindful and conscious about their eating behaviors, seek new enjoyment in physical activity, thus increase their sense of self-esteem and self-worth.
